Husband-Wife design team undaunted by new challenges Even when she worked as an executive personal assistant, Analee Achee-Hoyte would freelance as an interior decorator on weekends. Friends of Achee-Hoyte can attest to her moving around chairs and beds and sewing slip covers just to give new life to their drab décor. Based in New York now, Achee-Hoyte gets paid for her expertise as the co-owner of Simply Exquisite Interiors. The best part is that she gets to work with someone she loves and trust — her partner & husband Dexter, a professional carpenter, cabinet & furniture designer and mason by profession.
“My first love will always be administration, but my love for designing interiors started back in 1996 where I did jobs for friends and a few clients,” Achee-Hoyte stated in an e-mail interview. Back then, she was not yet fully trained in the field of interior decorating, she had a knack for it. She was only certified in the field in 2001 when, after migrating to New York, the St James-born Achee-Hoyte enrolled at a prominent Interior Design school in New York City. Her husband, Dexter, who comes from a long line of tradesmen in his family, was involved in custom cabinet making and furniture design before migrating. They eventually opened a business together. The Santa Cruz-born Hoyte had a client list that included former Chief Justice Michael de la Bastide and masman Ian Mc Kenzie along with several residents of the Santa Lucia Condominiums at Semper Gardens, Diego Martin.
Now that they have put their creative heads together, the Hoytes want Simply Exquisite Interiors to be a household name. They are not in the least intimidated by the fact that they have launched a business in a foreign country. “With our professional portfolios covering years of service in custom design and construction, our personal touch is what sets us apart from the others,” Achee-Hoyte said.
Although the company’s target group is mainly homeowners, Achee-Hoyte said retail shop owners, restaurant, lounge and spa owners can also benefit from their services. Already, the Hoytes have built up a clientele, but, like anyone doing business, they would like to see that client list expand. “We have plans to extend the business in the Caribbean. With the birth of the Caricom Single Market Economy, our options are a little more enticing. “We plan to do some island hopping soon. Who knows which island will be the lucky pick for the new home of the business.”
The Hoytes haven’t ruled out launching a business in T&T. “The original SEI Decorators once located on Park Street in Port-of-Spain is still registered, maybe we will re-open and offer a few services.” But for now you can view us online at: www.simplyexquisiteinteriors.com
The start of college for Achee-Hoyte’s daughter from a previous relationship, remains top priority for the couple at the moment. “Everything right now runs a close second,” she said. WomanWise asked the Hoytes to share some of their Christmas decorating and carpentry tips with you our readers:
Christmas is the time of year when we tend to pull out all the stops, but try not to overdo. It’s easy to clutter your space when adding the trimmings associated with the season. Keep your colour scheme simple, that way you control your décor instead of the other way around. Try using various textures and hues of the same colours to bring about your desired effect. West Indians own antique furniture that they take for granted. Every home in the Caribbean has at least one antique piece sitting around with way too many layers of paint or varnish suppressing the beauty, not to mention the value of the item.
Take on the project of refurbishing your find, strip off the old paint or varnish to display the wood’s natural grain. Have a cabinet maker repair any loose or broken pieces and choose from the many stains and finishes on the market, it’s not as hard as it looks.
If you’re not that adventurous, have the cabinet maker lacquer the piece for you. You might be surprised to know that you’re sitting on a piece of history that may be worth quite a bit of money. SEI - Simply Exquisite Interiors admin@simplyexquisiteinteriors.com For Service Call: 868-222-7267
